Water at Linden is contaminated

Dear Editor,

While according to the Guyana Water Inc. they are grappling with getting their act together so as to bring a tolerable and stable water service to the Linden Community, a greater danger looms, typhoid! This water disease has for some time now afflicted residents, with the Linden municipality health department warning the community to boil the contaminated water and it seems to be spreading once again, causing justifiable alarm.

From no water to brown water to contaminated water! A random check will show approximately 2-3 out of ten who visit the doctor are diagnosed with this disease, and children appear to be the vulnerable ones, indeed a serious case for concern. But worse than that is that anyone or parents wanting a test must do so at a private clinic at a cost of $800 - $1000 per test since for whatever reason one cannot have it done at the hospital complex. Quite recently a group of people conducting a survey testing water used in homes have found the water having no chlorine, samples which they have shown to occupants at a number of homes. But doesn't Guyana Water Inc. ever get on TV/Press with explanations, warnings and precautionary measures to its consumers that it sends ridiculously high bills to?

The relevant authorities need to check.

Yours faithfully,

Frank Fyffe

Lindeners should continue to object to the large water bills the company is sending residents. The water is brown and nasty and as oh really said it comes out of the demerara river. I saw a dead dog in that river last week.

The water company has the nerve to send out water bills for the nasty water they want people to drink which they take from the nasty demerara river.

To all who are concerned, it is the government's responsibility to the people of Linden and the country to ensure that , clean water supply is given when they privatised the water supply company. No matter who is the supplier they should have systems in place to test the water on a regular basis. When you look at the cost of it to the tap and the cost of health maintainance when they failed its terrible disadvantage to a people tha is already suffering beyond imagination. And Mister Goodguy.I wonder what makes you so good? Everything in life has a cost but when you pay that cost you must have value for money. I spent 4 weeks in Guyana last December and the water so murky and hardly coming through the tap for most of the visit. I was still scared to brush my teeth when it came clear.I saw the floaters in the glass when taken from the tap, I shuddered in disbeleif and disgust.... Its crying shame. But I must advise my people to boil or Chlorine the water every time ( if you can afford it). Typhoid isn't a simple infection. it can kill you in days by dehydration, especially the very young, sick , and elderly.

Well done again, Frank, for pointing out the deplorable state of affairs at linden. You will remember that this problem existed for years and the Govt seems unwilling to correct it. The pact between the govt and a certain bottle water industry which thrives at Linden and other black and depressed communities across Guyana is overlooked. It is ufortunate that the name Norman Browne is barred from contributing to the frontal message board of this site. I have a duty to speak the truth as I see it on behalf of my town and the section of its people who live in abject poverty; that duty, it appears conflicts with friendship, a friendship that has been long before this site existed. The owner of this site must understand that the pursuit of this writer will be relentless in exposing ills wherever they are at Linden. Where duty begins, friendship ends! I would have liked to point out why LTV no longer exist at Linden and why Dario Mc was fired on orders directly from the office of the president. What things were exposed by LTV, under the management of this young stalwart who was most professional at his job. LTV, had exposed that water situation years ago. It reported that people were drinking traces of faeces coming from their taps. The proved that test were done by a reputable instituition. A young and decent teacher, not the passa passa type, who was a moral beacon in her profession, sadly succumb to Typhoid just recently at Linden. Your article missed that. I shall try to register again on this site, yes, this Linden site, because I owe this obligation to Linden to speak out! This is a duty I shall not waver from. Hope to be reunited with the great contributors on the message board who have been doing a tremendous job. If you dont hear from me, know I am still barred. Barred but never will be silenced! The struggle continues..

Land of Many Waters! we need to understand that clean (treated) water do not come like that. Treated water is the product of several water treatment process, which: (1) Cost a hefty sum of money (2) Need Money to operate and maintained (3) Need resources to keep them up and running. If u havent recognised by not, the key term there is money. We dont want to pay for water, so how do we expect clean water? Believe me when I say, we can get clean water if we decide to pay for it (as with the more developed countries). One last thing...poor sanitation and hyguine are other major causes and transmission of Typhoid. So please...imporve on these area personally and help yourself first.

I think it is time the water authority come to grips with sending pure water into pipe lines. So much thousands of dollars for one house hold per a year, if you don't pay for that dirty water they cut it off by half of the year. What is a sweet country like Guyana turning to.

PPL just quick to think that white ppl will leave their country(and their own problems) to come to Guyana to fix small problems like officials stealing the money and we'll live happily ever after.MY ppl living here just have to stop complaining, stop paying water bills, light and whatever else bill.stop giving these companies(especially foreign companies) your hard earned money to be treated like toilet tissues. UNTILL YOU RISE UP AGAINST ATROSITIES, YOU'LL HAVE THE SAME COMPLAINS.
