Flooding in Linden brings emergency works
The National Drainage and Irrigation Authority (NDIA) is to commence emergency works in several areas across Linden following intense rainfall that caused flooding and erosion.

Minister of Agriculture Robert Persaud rushed to Linden yesterday following reports of severe flooding in a number of communities, including Silver City, Block 22, sections of Central Mackenzie, Coomacka and Victory Valley.

Hardest hit by the torrential rains yesterday was Silver City where Persaud had a first-hand look.
In an interview with Stabroek News following the walkabout, Persaud said that it is necessary to have corrective works done in identified areas at Mackenzie and Wismar beginning today.

“Upon hearing of the heavy downpours I spoke with the regional chairman and the NDIA staff and we decided to come here and see what additional work we can do or what works we had planned to kick forward and we have agreed on several interventions based on the recommendation by residents, the Regional Chairman and also the NDIA staff in this particular community and others too. You would see immediately sometime this evening or tomorrow morning some works kicking in,” said the Agriculture Minister, who has responsibility for drainage and irrigation.

During a first-hand look at the situation it was disclosed that several drains in the Silver City and Victory Valley areas had been clogged for more than twenty years.

In addition, it was noted that the topography of Silver City and its layout made it susceptible to erosion, especially during heavy rains when the top soil gets washed down and clogs the drains.

The intensity of the erosion was visible and several homes in the area had sunk to the extent that their windows were almost level with the roadway.

”So we now have to move from being in a maintenance mode to a more long-term fixing and rehabilitation mode,” Persaud noted, adding that some of the houses are structurally in danger and would require serious engineering.

The situation is so intense in some cases that relocation may be the only solution and for others restoration or some control measures are necessary.

The situation at Block 22, residents said, calls for some emergency interventions. They complained that several yards are constantly flooded whenever there is a medium to heavy downpour.

“The problems start when the water runs off from Wisroc over to Block 22. We can’t even think about going into our yards because it is usually so bad,” one resident said.

Others complained about their fear for their children’s health because of the large amount of garbage that would wash into their yards.
“We are so tired of this we talk to the Regional Chairman so often about this but yet we ain’t getting no help,” a resident said.

Regional Chairman Mortimer Mingo was a key member of the team that visited several flood-hit areas both at Wismar and Mackenzie.
Speaking about the situation at Coomacka, Mingo said that some immediate measures would be necessary to arrest serious flooding and erosion there.

He noted that there were monies allocated through the NDIA for works in the area but due to the severity of the existing situation it would be necessary for those projects to be fast-tracked.

Unusual flooding

Flood waters yesterday reached unprecedented levels according to business owners in the central areas.
“For the greater part of today things were at a standstill out here. I have been in this area for many years now and have never seen anything like this. Even the rats, roaches and centipedes were competing with humans for a dry place that alone can tell you what went on,” explained one entrepreneur.

Referring to the Mackenzie/Greenheart Street flooding, Mingo said that a collapsed culvert in the area was responsible and plans are in train to have the situation rectified. “We have to work closely with the NDIA to have these problems worked on because there is no budgetary allocation to the region to facilitate these works,” said Mingo.

At the level of the Central Government there is a budget of approximately $75M earmarked for Region 10.
Although Wismar, Linden is not a part of the NDIA’s original programme it was brought in through the Ministry of Agriculture and has been gradually receiving increasing allocations. According to Persaud it was recognized that the Community Drainage and Irrigation programme (CDNI) in Linden needs to be improved in terms of doing the maintenance works.

And to facilitate this process a new coordinator was recently appointed. Additionally there are concerns about the quality of work being done by the Community Development Councils (CDC) and Persaud said he would be looking at changing the existing arrangements from a contract to an ongoing basis.

Ole Lindener ur rite. I just came from Linden. A day in last week i was coming from town and while the driver was putting off a passenger another passenger threw garbage out of the bus window when ask y, her respond was everybody do it. To say all of tht. If everybody throwing stuff the place will never b clean and it will always have flood. And wht i also notice while i was in town i walk Regent street with garbage looking for a bin and never find any. Years ago i use to boast about self help but Lindeners get blasted lazy all they do is sit and chat and crust each other. The Government have bigger fish to fry so Lindeners get off of ur butts and clean the place. Must big up the Government for the gr8888 improvement with the water supply in Linden.

Our mindset will always be our downfall. We don't see beyond our front gate. That is the same problem in the where democrats depend so much on the government, that they want to be spoon fed. Let the churches, football clubs and other organizations come out, join hands together and do something that will make you proud. Nasty, dirty environment is your business, not the government. Come together and do what ever it takes to save your community. packing up and moving abroad is not always the solution; you are only going and enjoy the fruits of somebody else's labour. put two white men there and you will see how they will transform that place. I said it with no apologies.

Seek out those organizations for Self Help projects. Sometimes you got to bend backwards to get things done. Drinking and Partying won't resolve this issue.
By: Bighead 5/25/2010 10:01:32 PM
Did you people not see this coming? I fully understand that there are certain officials who are suppose to take the initiative to get the right projects started. Did you hear me Mortie? I said it earlier and will say it again...Lindeners need to get back to the old SELF HELP culture to get some things done.
I'm sure the leaders of the community and country will chip in if they see that Lindeners are trying to help themselves.
But no...all you perople doing is either sleeping after the last party, partying or planning the next party.
Continue in that mode and soon the Demerara River gwine join the rain in flodding y'all out.
How about getting some of you "Big and Bold" and "Miss Town Week" models to join a cleanup brigade for the next Town Week celebrations. Mortie will get you a March Padst parade...because thats all he's good at.

Too many people are busy sharing what should be their private information on FACEBOOK and not paying attention to the bigger issues. You have a facebook account with five hundred + friends and your dam yard full of bush , your house need painting, your gutter block up and stink. You want the Government to help . What have you done to solve this flooding problem????????? We each can do our part.

Now as recent as a few weeks ago i visted my home town and to my surprise drains were erected in some parts of the wismar housing scheme and low and behold its already falling apart so i decided to take a close look to see what they use to build these storm drains and to my surprise all that was used to erect these drains that is suposed to form a impact wall for the road were HALLOW BLOCKS this just a damme shame i strongly believe the works minister within the regional democratic council should be fired and placed before the courts this is just a waste of tax payers money and the next thing you will hear is that this project cost $ 100 million dollars this folishness has to stop people lets call a dog a dog and stop pulling the blanket over our eyes
By: wisroc guy 5/24/2010 8:40:42 PM
now $75 million dollars has been allocated for linden for this purpose lets see how much will be spent on the remedying of the problem .
When really is there the next election for regional chairman and other council members they all need to be fired .
I am calling on the young voices to rise up and take up the challenge that is before us we can do it where are the voices of Norman Brown ,Sharma Soloman ,Boris Williams and other vocal young men and women of yesteryear we need change lets take a page from the afore mentioned youths and also the famous Philip Bynoe where are our voices the time has come .
It make me sick when ever i see the way this community has detoriated and Mingo and other regional executives have the gutts to stand on the podium when ever there is an event to say something these people should be ashamed to even be seen in the public .
lets us please do something now because its already late linden is dying to live , its like a seed that has been placed into the ground it needs nurturing in order for it to burst out and grow to bring forth fruit , everything is here in linden to make this town better and still we are seeing all this skulduggery being done .
By: wisroc guy 5/24/2010 8:28:38 PM
now people this problem didnt start yesterday it has been like this for years every may june we have this problem and nobody that is incharge in linden is smart enough to maintain these drains in the dry season them wait until it starts to rain then every body start to complain. look linden has some of the best engineers in the country and they are not being used as consultants on these issues instead they employ people from outside of linden that has no knowledge of such works .
and as it relates to Mingo we all know what he is doing and that is nothing but still he has been voted for over and over it is time for the people of linden to say enough is enough and get rid of these thieves and elect young men and women with vision and insights to take this town to the next level .
youths of linden arise and take up the mantle lets come together and pool our ideas to make this town better i am confident that we can , we are the visionaries of this town these men that has been at the helm of the once powerful town in guyana has sold us out for too long .
like moses said to pharoh let my people go for too long we are under servitude and we have gotten no results .
By: wisroc guy 5/24/2010 8:06:59 PM
Take warning. Global warming. The Guyana government has people who could solve this proplem. They are hiding the money or using the money for this causes for their own personal gain. Its a shame that people outside have to read about the problem and not any solution to the problem. Linden has money to fix this problem let them use it, fix the problem then put it on the news at to how proud they are of linen. Enough of the what cannot be done and focus on what ( you the People in Linden) can do.
By: Anonymous 5/24/2010 1:53:02 PM
These people want these positions for their own gains and profits. When are we actually going to see them spare head a project in the actual fields. Sitting in the office and passing orders ain't enough. Go out and listen to what the man on the street has to say. It will help you sleep better at nights.
By: blackgold 5/23/2010 9:24:39 PM
only now u know mingo is a big bullshit he collects the government money to sit his fat asss whole day and using the moneu to have more houses and fattt bank account u alll check he out or get a audoitor to audit him good luck
By: reader 5/23/2010 9:06:00 PM
why it is only when something happen people like (Mingo) alway talking alot of bull!!!!!. it never his responsible to do anything , what are Mr Mingo responsibility as REGIONAL CHAIRMAN of Linden
By: b/baller broklyn nyl 5/23/2010 7:40:25 AM
We need expert advice on this matter for a fast solution. The Linden Town Council should get some of this money to hire a least sixty temporary people to weed, dig the drains and fill sand bags to stop the erosion before a next heavy down pour.
